US gasoline inventory: common questions
- What are US gasoline inventories?
- They are the total volume of finished motor gasoline and blending components held in tanks and terminals across the United States. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports the figure weekly in its Weekly Petroleum Status Report.
- Why do gasoline inventories matter?
- Gasoline stocks show how much fuel is available relative to demand. Stocks typically draw through the summer driving season and build in winter, so the weekly change is read against that seasonal pattern rather than in isolation.
- What is the difference between gasoline and crude oil inventories?
- Crude oil is the raw feedstock refineries process. Gasoline is one of the finished products they make from it. A crude draw alongside a gasoline build, for example, points to heavy refinery runs converting one into the other.
- How often are gasoline inventories updated?
- The EIA publishes the figure every week, typically Wednesday around 10:30 a.m. Eastern for the prior Friday's week. This page reads that same EIA series and shows the latest reading with its as-of date.
