40 Years of American Silver Eagle Demand

· By the ByShovel Research Desk

Every American Silver Eagle the U.S. Mint has sold since 1986, by the month: the panics, the record years, and the January spike nobody talks about.

The United States Mint has sold more than 679 million one-ounce American Silver Eagles since the coin debuted in 1986. Plotted by the year, four decades of sales read like a seismograph of American financial anxiety: two flat decades, then a wall of demand every time the system wobbles.

The Mint reports these figures every month, and they are one of the cleanest retail-demand signals in precious metals: coins ordinary people actually paid for, not paper contracts. We keep the running headline totals on the US Mint sales dashboard. Here is the whole history in one picture.

Two quiet decades, then 2008

For its first twenty years the Silver Eagle was a coin-collector product. Annual sales drifted between three and ten million and bottomed at 3.5 million in 1996. Then the 2008 financial crisis nearly doubled demand in a single year, from 9.9 million coins in 2007 to 19.6 million in 2008, and the coin stopped being a hobby.

The golden age: 2011 to 2016

The years after the crisis were the Silver Eagle boom. Sales cleared 33 million coins for six straight years and peaked at 47.0 million in 2015, still the record. 2014 (44.0 million) and 2013 (42.7 million) rank just behind. If you have read that 2013 or 2021 was the biggest year, that is the record month talking, not the record year.

The single biggest month on record is January 2013, at 7.5 million coins. The biggest year is 2015, at 47.0 million. They fall in different years, and the two are worth keeping straight.

The bust, and COVID

The boom broke in 2017: sales fell to 18.1 million, then bottomed at 14.9 million in 2019 as premiums compressed and the crisis trade faded. COVID reversed it overnight, 30.1 million coins in 2020, and the 2021 silver-squeeze episode held demand at 28.3 million. The market has cooled since 2023, and 2025 closed at 11.6 million, the lowest full year since 2007.

The January spike nobody mentions

There is a seasonal tell in the monthly numbers: six of the ten biggest months in Silver Eagle history are Januaries. The Mint releases each year's new-date coins in January and dealers stock up at once, so the year almost always opens with its heaviest month. It is a supply-calendar artifact, not a demand surge, and it is exactly the pattern that misleads anyone reading a single month on its own.

The complete month-by-month series, gold and silver, every month since 1986, is available as a downloadable dataset, and the live headline figures update on the Mint sales dashboard. To watch the metal itself, our silver page tracks the spot price and inventories.
