Rocky Mountain distillate inventory ·EIA week ending August 21, 2026

Rocky Mountain distillate storage holds 3.7 M bbl as of August 21, 2026, up 8.1% week over week. It is currently building faster than usual.

The Desk's read

Diesel and heating fuel is piling up fast in the Rocky Mountain district, the four states EIA groups as PADD 4. Stocks reached 3.7 MM bbl as of 2026-08-21, rising 15.5% over 30 days, with the trailing four-report build sitting at the 87th percentile of all such stretches in the 37-year record. But the pile itself is only mid-range, the 73rd percentile of that record, so a brisk build lands on a merely comfortable base. We track the next reading in next Wednesday's EIA weekly report; watch whether the fast build holds or cools.

About this series

Distillate fuel oil, the category covering diesel and heating oil, held in tanks and terminals across PADD 4, the Rocky Mountain district. Reported weekly by the U.S. EIA as one of five regional cuts of the national distillate series. PADD 4 holds the smallest distillate cushion of the five districts, supplying mining, ranching, and long-haul trucking across the mountain states from a handful of refineries. Thin regional stocks mean local prices react quickly when supply tightens.

Today's reading sits in the upper part of the EIA record going back to 1990. Rocky Mountain distillate stocks are running above their typical level.

What is PADD 4?
PADD 4 is the Rocky Mountain district of the Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts, the five regions the EIA uses to report US petroleum statistics. It covers Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming. The district lines were drawn for World War II fuel allocation and remain the standard regional cut of US oil data.
What does this page track?
The total volume of distillate fuel oil, covering diesel and heating oil, held in tanks and terminals across PADD 4 (Rocky Mountain). It is the EIA's regional cut of the same weekly series the national distillate page tracks, and the five districts sum to the US total.
