What this total does not cover

This is the metal whose storage is publicly reported by these two networks — not all the gold and silver in the world. It excludes Shanghai and other Asian exchange vaults, central-bank gold held outside the London network, ETF metal with custodians that do not report to the LBMA, and every private or unreported vault. Roughly 216,000 tonnes of gold have been mined in all of history; the figure above is the reported vault subset of that, and the gap between the two is mostly jewellery, private holdings and official reserves stored elsewhere.

The two sources are also on different clocks. CME publishes COMEX warehouse stocks every business day; the LBMA publishes London holdings once a month, in arrears. Each row above carries its own reporting date rather than a single one for the page, because the combined figure is the most recent reading of each — the only daily answer the underlying data supports.

Common questions

How much gold is there in the world's vaults?
This page adds the two vault networks that publish their holdings: COMEX-approved warehouses in the United States and the London vaulting network reported by the LBMA. The combined figure is at the top of the gold section, in troy ounces and metric tonnes. It is not all the gold in the world — it is all the gold whose storage is publicly reported by these two networks.
What is NOT counted in this total?
Metal in Shanghai and other Asian exchange vaults, central-bank gold held outside the London network, ETF metal stored with custodians that do not report to the LBMA, and every private or unreported vault. Roughly 216,000 tonnes of gold have been mined in history; the figure here is the reported vault subset, not that.
More questions
Do COMEX and LBMA hold the same metal twice?
No. COMEX-approved warehouses are physical buildings in the United States and the LBMA network is physical vaults in London. They are separate metal in separate places, which is why the two figures can be added.
Why do the two sources have different dates?
CME publishes COMEX warehouse stocks every business day, so that figure is a day or two old. The LBMA publishes London vault holdings once a month, in arrears, so that figure is the previous month. The combined total is the most recent reading of each, and every line on this page carries its own as-of date rather than a single one for both.
Why are base metals not included?
COMEX reports copper in short tons and the LME reports it in metric tonnes, so a combined base-metal total would hide a unit conversion inside its headline. Gold and silver are reported in troy ounces by both vault networks, so they add cleanly. Base-metal stocks are on the LME and metals pages.
Data sources

COMEX warehouse stocks come from CME Group's daily metal depository reports; London holdings come from the London Bullion Market Association's monthly vault data. Per-venue detail lives on /comex and /lbma-vault. The addition is ours. This page reports the holdings; it does not offer investment advice.
