Daily Vault Briefing ·Aug 16, 2026
Managed money is piling into copper and gold paper at multi-year extremes while the physical metal in COMEX vaults tells two different stories.
8 signals · 2 series crossed a threshold today
Managed-money net copper hit 79,027 contracts, the highest since Feb 2021 and the 96th percentile of a 20-year record, up 34.4% over 30 days. That is the loudest reading on the board.
The paper build sits against a physical picture that refuses to line up. COMEX copper stocks pushed to a 7-mo high at 735,470 short tons, yet COMEX registered platinum sank to a 7-mo low and total gold stocks dropped to a 7-mo low near the 4th percentile of their short run. Managed money is long the copper story on both sides of the ledger; the gold and platinum shelves are thinning while gold positioning climbs.
LME lead shows the level-versus-speed tension plainly: sitting at the 100th percentile of a 19-year record while draining 9.6% over 30 days. A pile that large emptying at that pace is the gap worth watching, position extreme, velocity negative.
Two long-horizon extremes anchor the tails. SPR crude fell to 298.7M bbl, the lowest since Jan 1983, and Tokyo retail gold sits at the 99th percentile of a 38-year record. The data shows crowded paper positioning stacked on top of physical inventories moving in opposite directions.
Speculators are net long 79,027 copper contracts, the most since February 2021 and up 34.4% in 30 days. That ranks in the 96th percentile of a 20-year record.
Managed-money net gold sits at 137,662 contracts, the highest since September 2025 and up 18.5% over 30 days. A crowded but not record-extreme long, at the 67th percentile.
COMEX copper stocks reached 735,470 short tons, a 7-month high, up 7.8% over 30 days. The daily move was flat at +0.2%.
Registered platinum, the metal actually available for delivery, fell to a 7-month low of 193K oz, down 2.6% over 30 days. It sits at the 5th percentile of its short run.
LME lead stocks sit at 412,675 mt, the 100th percentile of a 19-year record, yet down 9.6% over the past 30 days. The level is at its ceiling while the trend drains.
COMEX total gold stocks slipped to a 7-month low of 26.64M oz, down 1.8% over 30 days and near the 4th percentile of their short run. The daily change was flat.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve holds 298.7M bbl, the lowest since January 1983, down 6.5% over 30 days. A thin national reserve leaves less buffer against future supply gaps.
Tokyo retail gold sits at 24,658 yen per gram, the 99th percentile of a 38-year record, up 5.1% over 30 days despite a 1.9% dip on the day.
